You can't. I had the same problem with my dog. The only words he understood were - walk, tea, food, play - anything HE wanted to do, when HE wanted to do them. Soon, your cat will learn how to use the can opener, or open a packet of his own food, & that's when you need to start worrying!!! (That last bit was a joke - but don't say I didn't warn you!!!).

For instance, you can talk to your cat. Some people feel silly speaking to cats, because they think animals can't understand them. These same people may feel comfortable carrying on long one-sided conversations with infants. Cats do receive information from your conversation: praise, comfort, and a sense of security.
You can get information, too. The more cats are spoken to, the more they will speak back. You will learn a lot from your cat's wide vocabulary of chirps and meows. You will know when it is time to get up (at least in your cat's opinion), when your cat is feeling affectionate, or when your cat is feeling critical or threatened, or is in pain. Your cat doesn't necessarily have something urgent to tell you; a passing meow in the hallway may be a simple hello.

Mainly, just talk to them. The more you talk to them and do repetive actions the more they pick up. A lot of times, depending on the stubborness of the breed they may only pick up on stuff they want to do. I had a basset hound that knew - play, walk, food, treat, cookie - but ignored the words no and stop. He knew - if he could pick up on so much else he should have figure out the bad words too.
A lot of times animals can pick up on simple sentences and commands. When our kitten was very young she didn't bury in her litter box. We would go in there, she would watch and we would say 'bury' as we used the scoop to come sand over. Now, we can say bury and she does it. She also knows a slew of other words - but then again she also likes to watch TV.
Of course - there is being to smart. She can open doors by turning the knob and turn on the faucets in the bathroom full blast. The ones you have to turn - she likes to watch the water go. So think twice about teaching your cat more. ;)

Hi, They say that cat's can learn more words than dog's so just keep trying, and remember cat's only do what they want to do and when they want to do it. My cats know different tones in my voice, i call their food bow-lie, or i say come on for your supper and they know as soon as they hear that they are going to be fed. They also have selective deafness but i bet you know that, they are little monkeys.

A way you can teach your cat his name is whenever you give his food just say his name over and over again, and pet him and generally love him, but generally make sure you say his name during activities your cat enjoys... he will learn to associate his name with pleasure and happiness, and when you say his name he will come.
