Wow, Jason S really buys a lot of stuff. Actually, you can get a Diet Coke for about RMB 2 in local grocery markets. Airfare from Shanghai to Beijing can be as much as RMB 2800 (but discounts are often available). All the others are about right. Costs for the following are high: housing in major cities like Shanghai, computers and electronics, and Western imported items. Prices at Carrefour and City Market are higher than in Chinese markets, but there is a wider selection of Western items. Costs for the following are low: street food vendors, fake watches/pens/handbags, local restaurants, bus transportation, newspapers, "massages" at barbershops, and counterfit DVDs/VCDs.

Jason S didn't give us what the night at the KTV - with girl - costs. By the way, it is expensive, too (or so I've been told).

There is no question that China is better off for having at least part of their population prosper. You get a virtuous cycle going: They begin to produce enough food for people to leave the land, the excess labor gets trained and educated, it begins working in services and industry; that leads to innovation and better education and universities, freer markets, economic growth and development, better infrastructure, fewer diseases, and slower population growth. But there are many, many others living outside this cycle. They live in villages or rural areas that only criminals would want to invest in, regions where violence, civil war, and disease compete with one another to see which can ravage the civilian population most.
