Breaking up is always rough for anyone.....let her down lightly with as little mess as possible. I like to hear (rather, don't like to hear...) that it just isn't working out. Give reasons, situations, etc, but don't dilly dally or waste time telling your friends first.

Believe me, a clean breakup is the best thing to happen to relationships since, well, dating... ;-)
