Usual holiday resorts are crowded for obvious reason, so unless you set to be there before July or after mid September, better to avoid them. If you want to stay in a city, I think Parma or Viareggio could be a good compromise; if you like smaller towns, in Piedmont you can find Lake Maggiore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lago_Maggiore, I suggest you Arona, or Valsesia http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valsesia (in English language Wiki you will find infos and pic about specific towns), if you like country (Bassa Valsesia) or mountain (Alta Valsesia) annd skiing; Parco Naturale Alta Valsesia (wildlife reserve) is there.
Monferrato should also meet your request.

Sicily's nice, as is Cinque Terre in the Italian Riviera. I haven't been, but Lake Como in the North is also supposed to be lovely.

I suggest you wonderfull islands near sicily like Favignana or Lampedusa, white beach and crystal sea and then you can also have a cultural brak, by visiting ancient temples.
