Unfortunately, dogs do run similar risks of a heart attack to humans - due to the same reasons of insufficient exercise and excessive food intake.
Try to increase the amount of exercise GRADUALLY - if your dog is very overweight, you want to avoid stressing his joints out by suddenly taking him for long walks (especially if he's been fairly sedentary)
Likewise, reduce his calorific intake - make sure he's eating a good quality diet, and feed 2/3 small meals per day, instead of 1 large one. This will help your dog to feel satisfied, and not hungry all the time.
Above all, make these changes gradually and stick to them - think long term rather than just knocking a few pounds off over a few weeks.
The exercise will do you good too - whether you are overweight or not!
Good luck

Overweight dogs face a lot of the same health issues than overweight people, such as heart disease and diabetes. It's also very hard on your dog's joints to be overweight and can contribute to arthritis and other structural conditions.
You should help your dog loose weight - feed him a more sensible diet. No free feeding (leaving the bowl out all day). And more exercise.

well all dog a are fat. but if you give your dog a lot of food you need to reduce it and if you are giving him food give him exercise. make him run in the mornings or evenings. you should have started this long back. give him healthy food do not give him junk food. give him lot of exercise. if you only give him food food and only food then he will surely get a heart attack. seee you have to take this thing seriously its a serious matter think it over.

It may not die only because of a heart attack but may also die due to any of the so many diseases that are connected to being overweight
