You do need a plumber. It seems like you have a leaking pipe under the floor, that is if you have floorboards. While waiting for plumber, turn off main water supply, and only use it if you really ned water. Good luck.

I'm not sure how badly the wetness is. A burst pipe would really flood the house if it was a feed line. If it's a drain (like a toilet or sink) then you'd notice it more when using those fixtures.
Water flows downhill so start at the origin and think what may be behind or above the wall. If it's happening on the first floor check the upstairs fixtures, if it's on the top floor, it may be a roofing leak or a radiator. It will save time and money if you can pinpoint the problem before calling for help.

I know you said to be serious, but I can't resist-
Do you have a dog? your problem may be that he needs some more outside time!

It sounds as if it's coming from a radiator,I would suggest turning the heating off and call out a plumber asap as its not going to go away, but have a look at the radiators near to the first damp patch and see if there's any sign of water dripping from the valves or pipes, and put something under it,you might be lucky and only need a joint tightening up,so ask the plumber to explain in simple English what the problems is,and what needs to be done...don't get ripped off.!:0(

Very little information.

Call a plumber NOW!
The problem won't go away by itself. And your carpets are getting ruined. the walls can now be getting damp as well as the woodwork. Leaving this problem waiting on a lot of guesses, isn't the best policy.
