When I first started in police work, disrespect, verbal abuse, and a physical attack were all dealt with in the same way. You beat the snot out of the offender and threw him in jail for something, even if you had to get inventive with the charges. Then things got more "touchy-feely". I remember with some sadness the day my Chief told me I could no longer carry my spoon sap in my back uniform pocket. "Not the way we do things anymore" was his comment. I miss that sap.
We were now expected to try to talk the offender into cooperating. I had a partner at one time who was amazing at this. I swear he could get an insane serial killer to lick his boots. I never was any good at this, in fact, I once had to spray MACE on a church deacon who became enraged over the traffic ticket I issued him.
Over the years, police have had better training and have better equipment to do the job. Verbal Judo, Pepper Spray, & Tasers are better than a nightstick up side the head. I do envy the new officers, I never got to Taze anyone; looks like a hoot.

Police officers and Deputy Sheriffs are trained in the escalation of force. Depending upon the level of resistance to arrest or lawful order determines how much force the officer uses.
1. Voice commands.
2. Soft-hands- Leading a person where you need them to go.
3. Unarmed restraining techniques
4. Non-lethal weapons - Baton, ASP, Taser, Pepper Gas, etc.
5. Lethal Force- Firearm
People who resist arrest are wasting their time.
Eventually....somehow, they're going to jail. It's easier on them to just cooperate and do as they are asked.

The public are abusive, they don't seem to realise that they can be arrested just for swearing at a police officer. I think that the instincts take over, the police officer generally knows how serious a threat he is under, and therefore whether he can subdue the attacker without resorting to using his nightstick or more.
As to how I feel about people who resist arrest, they get what they deserve, if they are not involved then they need to look to proving that, if they are, then tough, they finally got caught.

Well you always have to take care of how much force you are using. You do not want to harm that person. First use the baton, peper spray and a little bit of force. If you think the person could harm you then you can use other methods that are a little bit more harsh.
By the way are you a police officer? I'm kind of interested in that. I want to get a major in Criminal Justice and i'd like to know more about the job.

Verbally abuive people do not bother me. It is actually somewhat amusing. They can have the last word. I get the last action. I'm going home and they are going to stay the night in jail. I have had to use my taser twice. Both were individuals fleeing me. I have never really been attacked. However, I'm 6'5" 270 pounds. I think most people understand were that would go. If something were to happen there is a "force continuim" that is used . Basically most policies state that force is met with equal force. If someone is verball or passive hands are used. If someone pulls away, spray or a taser can generally be used. If someone punches or kicks a batton can generally be used. This goes to deadly force. If someone pulls a gun..... you get the point. However, each policy is different. Check your local police dept. policy to see...

~LOL crancrab 1! I'm assuming that you are a Police Officer, and you still don't know how to handle a situation like that? I would highly recommend you go through the Police Academy again.~
*Ellie L, your answer is the perfect example of a police officer playing JUDGE and JURY. It is not up to you to decide if a person is innocent or guilty or "They finally caught it." I hope you are only pretending to be an officer!
*The answers below my answer proves my point. The police LOVE to hurt people every chance they get. Imagine being innocent and being beaten, or worse, beaten to DEATH! One mentally handicapped man was ganged up on by the police, kicked and beaten on the ground, they punctured his lungs with his ribs and he later died at the hospital! There are cases like this all the time. BE ASHAMED!
This makes the police that do it more of a criminal than the actual crime or person doing it! Karma is going to catch up to you, know that!~

You always use the minimum amount of force necessary to detain a resistent active suspect. Use pepper spray, baton, hand compliance techmiques. If you think the other person will cause serious bodily harm or death use lethal force.

People that resist arrest should be tazed plain and simple.Police Officers are to protect and serve and if the suspect in question is attacking and not being cooperative the police have to do what they have to do to protect themselves.

maximum honestly. i'm fascinated by the respectful treatment of girls and giving them rights. yet whilst there's a double-widely used for adult men, it fairly is in simple terms incorrect. Why will no longer be able to a male be defended if their better half is abusive? it ought to no longer take place a lot, yet what approximately he few situations wher it does? adult men and females desire a similar criminal rights...era. No gender enjoying cards, no "feels orry for me, I;m a woman" crap. in simple terms equality under the regulation.
