It depends on the camera, the particular brand/model of battery, the image settings, whether you use flash, whether you use the LCD, how long you pause between taking shots, what speed your memory is, and how long you've let your camera sit around since the last time you charged your batteries (standard NiMHs will lose a full charge over the course of just a couple months without any devices actively draining them). The only way to get a good idea for how many shots you could take...is to shoot with the flash until they bottom out. You'll probably use the flash less than 100% of the time, so that should give you more per charge. However, you'll probably stall between shots, take longer to compose shots, and expend power checking the quality of some shots, all of which will reduce the number of shots you'll be able to take on a single charge. The two should average out enough to give you a good idea of how many sets of batteries and chargers you'd need to take with you on a trip, though.
