I've been in the US for 4 years on a F-1 visa and 2 years on a TN visa (I'm canadian). I've resided here continuously since 2000. Any ideas?

Nope. Only once you start the process will the clock start running on the 5 years.

No, you must be a legal permanent resident for 5 years.

Congratulations for going about this in the right way. I am sorry for wasting your time, cuz I don't know the answer. But why would you want to come to this country? I will let you in on a little secret....IT IS NOT A FREE COUNTRY.
