At a pet food store. Rule of thumb:If a grocery store sells it, it's poor quality. I have not found a grocery store yet that sells good quality pet foods. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Depends on what you want to feed.

The best food for any dog (save a few with very sensitive tummies) is a species appropriate raw diet, or BARF ("bones and raw food") diet. You can purchase all ingredients for this diet at your grocery store or butcher's.

If you feed kibble, however, there are not a lot of places that sell high quality dog foods. Most of the commercial foods, such as Beneful, are geared more toward the owner than the actual dog. The pretty shapes, the fun colors, the cheap price - the dog doesn't care about them, but the owner does.

You will want to keep away from foods that have lots of fillers (corn and wheat), by-products, meals, and colorings in them as they are not a good quality food for your dog. Fillers are often linked to food allergies, dull coat, and itching in dogs. Food colorings and other chemicals in cheap commercial brands have been linked to cancer in dogs. And by-products and meals are not things you'd consider feeding if you know what they are ... all the leftovers form chicken, beef, etc. that cannot be otherwise used, including meat from diseased chickens, for example.

Yuck.

There are a number of quality kibbles out there that are made with organic and human grade ingredients. You can recognize them by the fact that the food label lists things you actually know - beef, carrots, chicken, etc. rather than meals and chemicals.

Grocery stores, Target, Wal*Mart, etc. don't carry any quality dog foods. The only better foods PetsMart carries are Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo.

You may need to look into specialty pet stores and feed stores in your area to get the good foods. We have a Booth Feeds near us that carries California Naturals, Innova Evo, and a bunch of other quality foods. If price is a worry - these quality brands are about the same price than equal-sized bags of foods like Iams and Eukanuba.

You can also order a lot of those foods online.

Good food = no by products (heads feet feathers cancerous tissue etc) and no corn (it's hard for the dog to digest). You want to lean towards a food that isn't TO high in protein (to much protein causes the dog to be very hyper) but has a good balance of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Protein or protein meal (protein boiled down to reduce size then ground up) is the first ingrediant.

Make sure the food is natural w/o a lot of things that sound it should be in a test tube.

Check out http://www.nutroproducts.com/ http://www.royalcanin.us/

Eukanuba, Science diet, pro plan, beneful, etc have by products and a lot of fillers. Just because the commercial looks good doesn't mean the food is good.

Veterinarians will refer you to a dog food that THEY get paid to endorse. Go online, do some research about the ingrediants and added suppliments.

i.e. - nutro adds glucosamine and chondroitin to prevent arthrits and dysplasia.

Good Luck

I have all ways feed Nutro Lamb and Rice to my dogs. Just like everyone Else said, No corn and no by-products. Stay away from Iams and Science Diet, they have a lot of corn in them. I worked in a pet food distributor and pet store for years and we sold everything from chuck wagon (sugar and dye filled) to Nutro. If $30 a 40 pound bag is to much (Nutro costs) look at the first 5 ingredients and keep corn and by-products out. Less fillers the less they crap. Dogs can't digest corn, so it has no value to them

This question could cause some controversy! I think everyone has their personal favorite and reasons as to why they use it. On the other hand some people will have their reasons to NOT use a certain brand.

I use Ukanuba Lamb and Rice. This can be purchased at Petsmart.

My best advice as to choosing a brand of food is to watch out for "bi-products" and anything ending in "meal" in the ingredients listing. Thus translates into fats and parts of the animal that you probably wouldn't want your dog eating. Its important to feed your dog nutritious foods that keep them lean and healthy. Feeding poor diet will lead to long line of health problems and vet bills!

Also, I am not a fan of using "wet" dog food as it can lead to loose stools and cause problems with house training and "accidents".

What do you consider good? I feed my dog Purina One chicken and rice. It was recommended by her vet when she was a puppy and I've fed it to her all her life. She's very healthy and not a pound overweight. She just turned seven and most people think she's just a pup.
