He didn't.
Reason: He was dirt poor. He gave up all his belongings to help fellow muslims, so it would be logical that he never had any slaves, knowing he doesn't have the money to buy one.

Muhammad pbuh have had a slave Hazrat. But Muhammad pbuh appointed the son (USAMA bin Zaid) of that CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF OF ISLAMIC ARMY.
