This is a slight contradiction because, in general, software doesn't speed up your computer but slows it down. You'd speed it up by removing unnecessary software or making sure that it does not run at start up. Providing you know what you're doing you could get away without an on-access anti-virus: just make sure you manually scan every new file before opening it. Replacing the windows shell with Aston Desktop made my computer faster. You could try that: it's shareware. I'd suggest not adding software that claims to be able to speed up your computer. You may well find that the effect is temporary and it will still leave traces on your system after you uninstall it.
Upgrading hardware however is a different kettle of fish. Faster processor, more memory, faster hard drive, better motherboard, are all likely to speed up your computer.

What you actually need is not a software a hardware. It is called RAM. If you increase it's capacity your computer will simply run like nothing.
Else there are several ram boosting software available in the market which you can try. Although most of them are bogus but you can simply go to ggoole and search for "RAM boosting software".

personally, i like pc cleanup..heres the link:
http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/download.html
its 100% free, and it gets rid of TONS of files you dont need, clearing up a lot of space.
you can also defragment your computer -- everytime you use your computer, your files become jumbled and scattered, making it take longer to load things. when you defragment, it finds all your files, and puts them back where they should be making your computer run smoother. hope this helps :)

Make sure you defragment regularly.
Grisoft.com for excellent antivirus/spyware - it's called AVG free version.
Also Ad-Aware. Google that one.
All brilliant.
Get a bigger memory/faster connection.
Get your own connection!
