Well blackmail (extortion) is the act of holding something over a person's head in order to get their cooperation in manipulating you. I can't specifically define emotional blackmail because all blackmail has an emotional element. It is forcing your will on someone with an unseen weapon no one else knows about. Of course this secrecy in itself is an emotional thing...as is the threat of someone finding out something you want kept private, and destroying your relationships, and your support system, or harming someone you care about. The act of voluntarily submitting to something you don't agree with to prevent something worse, is also in itself, emotionally damaging. It strips a person of their dignity by taking their personal power to truly make their own choices. So it makes you feel less than, subservient, inferior.

You cannot have blackmail of any type in any healthy relationship. You go against the idea of both words, "healthy" and "relationship" which both imply that it is a truly voluntary arrangement to support each other. So the best way to have that relationship is to end it or the person with the power has to stop wielding it in an abusive way.
