Yes, they do.
The Army does this as well. In the Army, your first taste of this comes in the last 7 days of basic training during which you review all the things you've learned in training - it's basically one big field exercise with lots of marching, going to the range, etc. What you're talking about is called the Night Infiltration Course in the Army, and it's designed to give soldiers a bit of an idea what war sounds like - real fire, flares going up, etc.
During the course, trainees have to navigate an obstacle course. The explosions are simulated with pyrotechnics, however, the machine gun fire is real using real live ammunition. But - unless you stand up and look around in the middle of it, you're very safe. They do not shoot "right above your head", although it certainly feels very close.

In the late 50's, early 60's the army used a concrete mount that put the rounds well over ten feet over the recruits heads, to ensure no 'accidents", no big deal. But that was AIT.
Suspect blanks were for Basic?
I was the "Range Medic' for a while. There not so much for fear of "accidents" as for some troop going psycho on the range.
The hand grenade toss well that was totally "for real", what a lousey job for a Drill Sgt, I tossed mine about well ten yards,
thought the Sgt was gonna kill me, but he asked me what was I going in for "medic', he smiled and said "Ok, doc, just never touch one again!"

The US Army and USMC both do this. I'm not sure about the Navy and the Air Force though. This is done to not only let you know what it sounds like to have bullets being shot around you, but also to teach you the importance of performing a proper low crawl.

Bennie;
"Abby k9" is absolutely correct in her description. I can still remember crawling through the sand, under the barbed wire, as tracer rounds were flying by over head. Quite exciting.

Sure. It does two things. (1) gives you and idea of the sound and feeling of being shot at and (2) teaches keeps you head down!

this is a moronic movie meant to apply the ideal comparable methods that the invention Institute does (lie and deceive the prevalent public to make it look as though there's a huge conspiracy) and it did no longer supply any data in any respect.

The USMC and the US Army did it back in the 1970's when I went through army basic and my friend went through marine boot. Today? I can't see why they would stop.
