Some people believe in the superstition that cats have nine lives, because cats can survive falls from high places with few, if any injuries. This gives the appearance that the cats return to life after sustaining a fatal accident. Granted, they may sustain minor injuries, such as bloody noses, cracked teeth, or a few broken ribs, but they live to recover.

I know some in animal Mythology. In Egyptian Mythology both Bast and Pasht where two female goddesses associated with the domestic cat. One idea of the nine lives of cats is from the belief that the goddess Pasht had nine lives. The number nine has been associated with the moon in many acient cultures. Artemis/Diana who was identified with Bast, was also associated with the number nine.

People say that cats have "nine lives" because cats tend to not get hurt too easily. They'll fall from a high place, land on their feet, without a scratch.

A cat does not have nine lives, it is merely a saying, because a cat always lands on her feet, They always wangle themselves into dangerous situations and always manage to get off scott free.
That is why it is said that a cat has nine lives

I do not know, but i am glad as my cat has
1) fallen out of a window and hurt a leg
2) got runover and lost a leg
3) fallen from a tree trying to catch a bird!!!
so he has only got 6 lives left, unless he has used any others up.

That's just an old saying because cats seem to escape ijuries easily because of their agility and balance. Falling from heights which would hurt any other animal, will only minorly if any injure a cat.

they don't literally have nine lives.

but maybe the expression is partly attributed to the fact that cats always land on their feet when they fall or are dropped!
