i had my rottweilers tail docked about 2 months ago... the first time he was biting on the stiches and the wound wouldn't heal. the vet had to do it again and kind of shorter the second time.
everything went fine the second time and we had the stiches removed.the same night i noticed that my dog was limping. he seemed to have a problem with his hind leg. we took x-rays that showed one leg shorter than the other.
i am starting to believe that this ia a problem that occured by docking the tail because:
a. he was walking and jumping before and how is it possible from one day to another for a leg to get shorter and cause all these sudden symptoms?
b. the dog cannot strech out his leg. if he could then the 2 legs would have the same lenght. so i'm thinking that maybe a neurve was damaged during the tail docking and not being able to strech the leg makes it look shorter and wider in the x-ray.

try streching out one leg and not the other. in a picture it will look like the bended leg ends at a shorter point and it will seem as if its wider because it's closer to the camera. tha't how my dogs x-rays look like!!

Two totally different occurrences. One has nothing to do with the other. Talk to your vet but, it sounds like an injury or congenital defect. You didn't say how old the dog was. Could he be at an age where hip problems start to appear? The breed is notorious for them.

There is absolutely no medical reason that this could have been caused by a tail dock. There are no nerves that would connect the two, and not being able to stretch the leg fully would be more likely caused by a muscle, joint or tendon than a nerve. It is probably just coincidental that it occured at the same time. Rotts, like all large breeds, can get a number of genetic joint disorders that manifest suddenly.

By the way, x-rays are a one dimensional image, not a 3d, so perspective would not play a role in size like it does in a picture.

CS is correct the nerves do not work in that direction. Nerves stemming from the spine (and tail) have given paths associated with each vertebrae, what you are describing is not a probability at all. However even more interesting is that dogs get their tails cropped at 3-5 days old. Although it is possible that you went in with an older puppy or dog to have a tail shortened that would be major surgery and require anesthesia. Therefor I am having a hard time believing this story. Are you sure some Animal Rights group did not put you up to creating these "stories"?

i don't think the tail docking could have done this...and tail should be docked as few day old pups....rotties can get hips dysplahsa(sp way off) or maybe a dislocated hip...hock? it does seem odd that it just started...i think its most likely dislocated and the vet should have told u that...or atleast what he thought its was....but that sounds most likely... i know a chow that gets this all the time and she''l put it back her self or she goes to the vet to get it done...take her to a differ vet..i would.

aww... you have a rottie i have 3 bully's
but anyways, ther could be something that went wrong and your vet is not telling you (to avoid a lawsuit), i would take it to another vet and get there oppinion, hopefullly no nerve damadge done and it will be okay

hope your dog gets better

Perfect example of why people should NOT dock tails! It's cruel and completely unnecessary!!!!!!!!!

That said, it's possible that the vet nicked a nerve during the second procedure. I'd have a different vet check him out and see.
