From sitting long periods of time, on a plane or in a car, or at work; my tailbone gets so sore and it is painful trying to stand up. Seems like only rest can help so far; but does anyone know how to deal with this?

It's possible you have a condition called "pilonidal cyst" which develops at the tailbone. You should see your doctor and have a complete examination and ask about the possibilities of a pilonidal cyst. From Your description this could be occurring. They take time to develop. it sounds like you may have bruised or fractured your coxyx bone. and that is what happened to me when i was boogey- boarding and a wave came crashing down and i fractured my tail bone......very painful and takes a long time to heal.......go see your doc now !!!!!! do not put it off==please take care of yourself asap.....God bless and keep you safe and healthy and i want to wish you the best of luck with your situation....luv, Sweetness #1
