Lent is a 40-day period, which begins after Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is today. One is supposed to give up something they like for that 40 days.
It is sort of sacrifice to show love for God and Jesus.
I believe it came from the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, during which time, he had next to nothing to eat and was tempted by Satan three times.
It is to show one can do the same as Jesus did but on a much smaller scale.
Hope this helps!

Yesterday I was asking my husband about this. Actually to my understanding, lent is for 40 days which is remembered , when Jesus fast in the wilderness and recieved the Holy Spirit. Many fast for different things that they want to really exclude from their life, but fasting food and waiting on God for a good request such as for Holy Spirit/ reveal His kingdom/ His vision etc will be great.
"Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things .."
And then Jesus death and resurruction is remembered, so that thou we die we will also rise up on the last day..
I liked this one too ..
Fasts have a tendency to be oriented toward things like giving up food or television. But there are many other creative ways we can welcome Jesus healing touch.
Fast from anger and hatred.
Give your family an extra dose of love eah day
Fast from judging others.
Before making any judgements, recall how jesus overlooks our faults
Fast from discouragement.
Hold on to Jesus' prosmise that He has perfect plan for your life.
Fast from complaining.
When you find yourself about to complain, close your eyes and recall some of the little moments of joy Jesus has given you.
Fast from resentment or bitterness!
Work on forgiving those who may have hurt you.
Fast from spending too much money.
Try to reduce your spending by ten percent and give those saving to the poor.
SMILE-Jesus Loves you!

The Catholic Church and many other Christians Churches follow the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.
By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.
With love in Christ.

A magnificent and communal vision quest of the nature we cannot comprehend. Iconographers often fast for forty days before painting.

Its something very close to you (like ciggarettes in my case) that you battle to live without that you give up for a certain amount of time to show you have faith in God and that you are giving it up for him. sort of like giving thanks. Depending on your religeion but in the christian belief God died on the cross for us.... He gave his life so that we could live. Lent is a time for us to give thanks to him for this and give something very dear to us up for a certain amount of time.
