Is a driver's license sufficient identification, along with a social security card, or do you need a birth certificate, certified or otherwise, to establish your American citizenship? Also, I have heard there are supposed to be new fees due to take effect this year for crossing the border ( I heard $50.00 U.S. each time). Also, I have been told that if you have any kind of criminal record, especially domestic violence or some violent crime, they won't let you into Canada. Does anyone know regulations on this?

By next year you will need a passport. Right now you can get across with a drivers license (proof of identity) and a birth certificate (proof of citizenship) That is the regulations, given that border rules are getting tighter I would expect a hassle if your documentation is different than that.

Criminal records is complicated. Best to just click on my link and check it yourself. If your record is recent and several charges your chances are slim, if it is one charge a long time ago your chances are good.

There is no fee for crossing the border, only visa fees and any sort of application fees. Like it will cost you if you apply to overcome past convictions. But if you clear that, it is a onetime charge, not each visit.

If you are traveling without a passport, you are required to have a birth certificate and a valid picture ID for driving. Flying you need a passport.

The $50 you speak of is complete bs. It will cost you $2 to cross some of the bridges, but besides that there is no fees whatsoever.

If you have a criminal record, yes you will have problems at the border. Check Canada's requirements, it should be here:
