The chiuaua is technically the smallest dog although people breed toy breeds to be teacup size but they are prone to tons of health problems. I bought a teacup Maltese and paid almost $1000 and it died 3 days later because of a heart condition caused by breeders trying to make the breed so much smaller than it should be! I would get a chiuaua and don't worry about it being so tiny, rather look for a healthy, happy puppy that'll make a lifelong companion!

The chihuahua is the smallest dog. However, the 'so called' tea cups usually have many health issues. I've had several smooth coat chi's which averages about 6 lbs and had no problems. I just recently adopted a long coat chihuahua from a very good breeder which is currently 4 months old and she is just wonderful! I live in Texas and if you're interested the website addy is www.txlongcoats.com and the breeder's name is Nadine. She only deals with long coats. If you should go to the site and not see any recent puppy pic's just email her and she will be happy to send you some - I happen to know she has 4 new puppies that were born about a week ago. She keeps all her newborns in her house, not in kennels which I was impressed with. She's fantastic with answering emails before and after a sale. Her price range is around $675.00 and she will ship if needed. I highly recommend her!! :)

Lisa P said that the Chihuahua is the only toy not bred don from larger breeds that is incorrect the Italian Greyhound, although the tallest in the toy group was NOT bred down from larger breeds. In fact it is older than many of the ones people might think it was bred down from being the English Greyhound and the whippet. There may be other toy breeds that were also NOT bred down from larger breeds.
The Chihuahua is the smallest of the toys, but I suggest that you look at and study the breeds at the link bellow. One hint is that when you read the history of each breed it will help you get an idea of general temperament or activity that most dogs in the breed should portray..

The only kind of dogs that come to mind that are small are a pug and a dachshund. They seem to be the right size for what you're looking for. As for a Website, well, I don't have any, but I'm sure if you do a typical Google search you might be able to find something in your local area worth buying. How about looking at any local dog shelters or pet stores or maybe even the SPCA?

I know you asked what dog is "smaller" than a Chihuahua but the Chihuahua is the smallest recognized breed of dog in the world and is the only "natural" toy breed (the only small dog NOT bred down from larger versions of the same breed). The teacup Chihuahua is the smallest at a max of around 3-5 pounds. Their characteristics include:
*Good watch dogs (their bark is a good alarm)
*Courageous - aren't intimidated by larger dogs
*Well-rounded head, wide-set eyes, a saucy expression, erect ears that flare to the sides
*Short soft hair or long silky hair, some may be red, blond, blue or chocolate-colored, solid, marked or splashed
*Chihuahua puppies have a soft spot on the crown, similar to that of a new born baby
*Loyal, eager to please and highly trainable
*Fewer health issues then other toy breeds
*Indoor dogs, ideal for apartment living / the elderly or handicapped / those confined to home
*Thrive on much attention and human contact
*Longest-lived breed - known to live high quality life into their teens and some pass twenty
*Energetic, playful, can easily get all the exercise they need from playing with toys or roaming the house
Precautions:
*They can be seriously injured or killed by being stepped on, sat on or squeezed too hard.
*They should not be left unattended on high surfaces (table tops, bunk beds, high sofas or chairs, etc). They have little sense of height and could easily jump off and break a bone.
*They do not store much energy and have tiny digestive systems, they need to eat small, frequent meals or may suffer from a low blood sugar attack (hypoglycemia). Dry food should constantly be available for them as well as lots of water.
*Chihuahuas shiver when they are excited, apprehensive, discontented or frightened - not just when its cold.
*Chihuahuas prefer the company of humans to that of other dogs.
The AKC (American Kennel Club) has a list of approved breeders with dogs available:
http://www.akc.org/classified/search/index.cfm
Here is a link to the website of the place where I bought my dogs: http://www.petcitypets.com/pups4sale.html
They have some tiny cuties. They ship out of state also.
(New note: HEY! My answer is sooooo NOT a bad answer)

There is a teacup chiuaua. They are the size of a pet store rat and sleep in your house slippers or a tennis sock. They tend not to seem really healthy seemingly because they shake all the time and can be neurotic. Go to americankennelclub.com and there will be websites for reputable breeders and guaranteed healthy animals. Good luck!

I'm not 100% sure because its really hard to say. Pomerian's are really small, and so are papions.....get on yahoo and check pictures of them on the yahoo images page, both of them are really cute!! Chihuahua are a hard breed, the are not family dogs, and they like ALOT of attention....I have one and she is not trying to push my laptop off my lap right now as I type b/c she wants me to pay attention to her not the computer....but I love her to death! Good luck on finding a new baby! Papions are so cute and sooo sweet!! They have a very calm temperment

The chihuahua is the smallest breed in general, but there are other breeds comparable in size such as the yorkie and pomeranian.
