a gallup poll in 2005 has it at 40 percent of homes not sure about the number of people but it says it fluctuates between 38-42 percent of US homes are armed

Much more than you will ever know no way to get an accurate count since until 1968 gun control act took effect there was no registration of any guns.

There are no reliable sources, a conservative guess is about 2-3 million.There is no way to account for all the legal and illegal guns in the U.S. today.Even the legal ones are bout and sold, by both gun dealers and individuals. Individual sales are not recorded.

It is actually very difficult to determine, because there is a illegal market for weaponry as well as people who "hide" their guns.

However, the number should be at approximately 30-100+ Million.
