Hellooo. I am thinking about getting my navel pierced, but I like to exercise everyday and I was concerned that it might... interfere... with the piercing? Especially since I like to work my core a lot...

Anyone have experience on the matter? =P

It shouldn't be a problem, most of my friends, as well as myself, have pierced navels and all work out regularly. I've had mine for about 4 years and never had a problem, I have a regular core & cardio exercise routine. The only thing that may be uncomfortable sometimes is the shape of the jewelry you wear; for example, I have one that has a star on the top part (above the navel) and it hurts sometimes during rapid movement. Regular barbells w/ a ball on top, or hoops, seem less irritating (and a good place usually only allows sterling silver when you get it done, because it can be totally sterilized, or so I was told). Otherwise it's been fine! Just remember to clean it afterwards, and especially in the first few months of getting the piercing. Many people I know had some infection initially, even from sterile salons, but nothing serious; the piercing process didn't even hurt when I got it. It can ooze sometimes (gross, yeah) but just follow the instructions they give you at the salon and make sure it's a reputable place! Ask around or research online if you need to, and you can even check the place out beforehand to see how you feel about it. I recommend getting a cleaning solution (places like Claire's and the Icing have them), usually called "Ear Care" but the directions will tell you if it's safe for the navel and jewelry. It takes a few months to heal so the winter is a good time to go, it should be better by swimsuit weather. As a side note, also remember that most places will not allow you to donate blood within a year of getting a piercing (or tattoo, for that matter).

A fairly helpful website that I've seen explains a lot about piercings and whether or not you 'qualify' for one, and says this about exercise:

"Usually not a problem, although you may need to adjust your form to avoid putting pressure on the jewelry. Listen to your body, and make changes if it hurts. Do make sure you're not wearing Lycra workout clothes over the piercing. But don't worry about your own sweat. As long as you shower afterwards, you should be fine." (cited)

Hope this helps and good luck!

I've seen LOTS of girls in the gym with navel piercings, even some bodybuilders and figure competitors. You may need to take it easy on the midsection after you first get it so it can heal, but that's probably it.

not at all. I got mine pierced when I got out of the military in '94 and have had no problems with it.
