I have neighbors who have shot my rooster while it was in a cage, on my property,
and has shot my guinea fowl, also in a cage on my property.
The police were notified and a report filed.
Now, they have been sprinkling seeds in front of my house and making a trail to
their house. We contacted the police, and when he questioned our neighbors,
they said that they were trying to lure the chickens into their yard so that they could shoot them.
We contacted the Hawaii Island Humane Society 24 hour emergency service and
were told that chickens are edible and so it did not matter.

I have done research on the Hawaii state laws governing animal cruelty.

Here is what I found:
Statute in Full:
§ 711-1109 Cruelty to animals.
(1) A person commits the offense of cruelty to animals if the person intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly:
(a) Overdrives, overloads, tortures, torments, cruelly beats or starves any animal, or causes or procures the overdriving, overloading,

You need to be reporting your idiotic police department! Start a free website and expose this problem. Contact the ASPCA at

Here's a few others too - Your governor's office is the last one - contact her!

Call PETA or ASPCA. They could probably do something about the H.I.H.S. The Hawaii Island "Humane" Society should be ashamed for not taking care of this problem. Just because an animal is "edible" doesn't make it less an animal. It's still animal cruelty. Not only that, but they are shooting INTO your property. You could probably bring up some endangerment complaints. Say that with the knowledge that your neighbors are shooting your animals into your property endangers your life. You have a right for you, your animals (edible or not), and your home to be safe. It's going beyond shooting your rooster... Your neighbors are sick and dangerous.

Best of luck to you.

You should research the loss of the birds as property. It sounds like your local law enforcement doesn't take animal cruelty too seriously or that local prosecutors don't. They probably do care about property crime. Get a very high estimate on value of the birds fro a professional of some sort. Take that to the police with any photos.

Sorry you have such sick neighbors.

The Humane Society does not sound like it did its job properly, but I think you should give them another chance. Sometimes even the best organizations hire complete idiots. That must've been what happened, because it is not the general policy that edible animals are fair game for anyone to kill. I mean, if you want to get technical, all animals are edible. And aside from animal rights, the chickens are yours and your neighbor has no right to damage your property. So I guess call the Humane Society again, and demand to speak to the person in charge. Good luck!

It comes all the way down to what the prevalent public discover ideal, that's why AR companies try to divulge the cruelty in production facility farms and slaughterhouses. some hundred years in the past they used to entertain the crowds in england by potential of putting cats on fireplace. Cruelty and human rights rules mirror the zeitgeist. We ought to shift the zeitgeist to work out a shift in the guidelines. contact local media tv and newspapers as human interest story and lack of police action. if the neighbors were on your property, then they were trespassing with intent to assault/harm and call spca and police to let them know that you will be granting interviews...also post to spca sites and animal rescue.

Write to your local humane society and your local government. Do NOT write to PETA. They kill more animals than any other organization!
