this law does put officers at risk, criminals who would fall into this category would tend to be more dangerous since they would not have anything to lose and they would also be a significant danger to the public they would more likely take hostages as means to evade arrest.

Three Strikes law is coming back as a haunt now. It sounded good on the soapboxes as the politicians got 'tuff' on crime. The reality is that now the law gives the accused or suspect the no option choice, and that is no choice at all. Warehousing pot smokers and debtors in with career criminals is not a solution. The pot smoker gets two arrests and now is looking at life for a traffic stop. Well the guy learned stuff in the prison, that he did not want to go back. The law is on the books, it would take years to get it back to some normalcy. So the brave officer that serves and protects the society is faced with a man that has no options if a ticket is written. Tuff break for all.
One thing that would help is the Banning of Handguns. You cannot hunt with them, or its stupid if you do. They are human killers by design, and the design is good.
Ban handguns, then start on the Semi Automatics, there is no sport or food to be gotten with a firearm that shoots 3rps.
Bolt Action or Single Shot Rifles for Hunting or Home Defense.
I salute the Officers of the Law that respect and uphold the laws with Honor and Humanity.

The streets are going to be dangerous no matter what law is on the books, and law enforcement will always have the blogbaba's respect. It is not a job for the faint of heart.
