Generally only plain colored dogs will change color; i.e, a poodle is born black. By age three, they are "blue". However, some breeds tend to change colors as puppies, so you really can't be positive. If the dog is a mixed-breed, your guess is as good as mine. There is no way to be sure. But if the dog is purebred, it'd be really cool if you would put that in the details.

Also, my puppy has, and is, changing color. Lucy is a Goldendoodle, and was born apricot. As she grows she is going back and forth between gold and apricot; getting lighter and darker.

Yes, I've known of puppies to be one color when they're young and then change slightly when they're older. Usually it's not a dramatic change, they don't go from white to black or anything like that, but they definitely can change. Sometimes markings will change in size or positioning, or some different hue will appear in the dog's coat.

It's really best not to get a dog just because of its color. The dog's temperament is way more important. I realize it can be difficult when your dog dies, but keep in mind that you will not be able to replace the dog. Just because your new puppy has similar markings, it is not going to have an identical personality. Accept your new dog for what he is -- a totally different dog with his own individual personality.

His total color probably won't change. The shade of his fur may darken or lighten. It may not though. My dog's fur got a LOT darker. She is a golden retriever and she started out like a blonde. Now she almost has the same color as my little cousin's red hair!

What breed is it? A lot of terrier breeds change color as they mature. My friend's cairn terrier totally changed colors. My own dog (a mutt from the shelter) went from black to salt and pepper.

Sorry to hear your last pup passed away. That's always sad.

It's a possibility, most puppys go through somewhat of a color change when coming into adulthood.

My yorkie was dark brown when I got her, but her fur was really matted, so I had to get her shaved, and her new fur grew in gray. I also have a poodle corgi mix, and he stayed the same color.

Sometimes they get a little lighter as they mature. But, it sounds like the color he is will be the color he will be. He sounds beautiful.
