That he thinks that you,
1) Seem above him in social standings.
2) Don't seem to be friendly towards people like him.

He probably likes as a friend and he is not sure. Slow down and don't say anything else. Guy get scare when girls go too fast. I'm a girl and if I go with the guy and he say he likes me and I'm not sure whether I like him or not, I would probably say the same thing.

That completely depends on the context he said it in, and how positive he sounded when he said it. It could mean anything from that he thought you were way too cool/hot for him and out of his league, to that he thought you were mean or unfriendly.
