Hi Rudy -- For the reason why it's hard for people from some nations to get a visa to the U.S. -- briefly, it's as other people mentioned. Our Congress believes, and with very good reason historically, that, given the chance, an extremely large number of people (my guess is up to hundreds of millions) would come to the U.S. and likely never leave (this is found in section 214b of our Immigration and Nationality Act, should you be interested). Our country would be overwhelmed, and a good many people who mean to do us harm would enter. So, entry controls are necessary. The few countries that do not need visas are those whose citizens have a demonstrated, good track record of visiting the U.S. without incident.

As to why it's easy for Americans to visit other countries (in many cases, but not all, without a visa), it's because American visitors tend to be good guests, obeying laws and paying their bills; bringing a good deal of tourist dollars in to other countries; and bringing a good deal of expertise and trade to other countries.

President Bush addressed that issue while visiting Europe. He is for updating the visa waiver program to some new EU member countries and South Korea. There is currently debate now in the congress to update the program. Currently 27 countries are in the visa waiver program and since there are new ones meeting the requirement it will be amended soon.

The simplest way to put it is because when Americans go to visit foreign countries they generally return home.

We have a big problem her with people overstaying their visas and remaining in our country illegally.

Us Americans have that advantage,we have more freedom. In places where you come from it's harder to get a visa, because the government is harsher with the people, and they make it harder for
people to get a visa, because they don't want too many people to leave. They need the economy to continue to boost.
