I am going to give you the truth here - it doesn't help if things get sugar-coated...

I consider myself to be succesful because at the age of 24 I am a qualified, practicing attorney at a large bank in South Africa, co-owner of an IT company and owner of an exclusive corporate gift shop... and how did I get here you ask? Not easily! I know its a clichè but hard work really does pay off at the end of the day, it only depends on how badly you want something.

Now don't get me wrong - no-one is ever going to get rich by working for a boss so if wealth is your goal... do something about it straight away - read the book "rich dad, poor dad". The thing is, I am absolutely the opposite type of person that you would think I am. I did not have a wealthy family, I had one hell of a childhood (not good btw), was almost killed when I was 11, became involved in satanism, drugs and left my parent's house at the age of 14 - without finishing school...... So everything I have today was earned by determination to to something better with my life.

I also don't understand the point of our existence. I am the first one who will tell you that life is meaningless! I don't understand the whole cycle. I don't get it why you have to be born, be in school for 12 years of your life just so that you can learn to work. You work to get food into your stomach. Then you marry and have children and continue to work your butt off, only to be able to send your children to school so that they can learn to work... etc. etc. - I JUST DON'T GET IT.

However, the fact that I don't understand or like life, doesn't mean I have to be completely unsuccesful and poor to get through it. Don't you think being detached but succesful is much better? If life has no point to you but you are here anyway, won't you rather want to go through this meaningless journey (called life) being succesful and having the financial means to escape every now and then? Or would it be better for you to be financially unsuccesful and be stuck in the reality of life all the time?

Think about what you want and then make your choice, because people who really don't like this world or this life, are determined to be financially stable enough to be able to escape from it from time to time. - The alternative is to be caught in this cruel world all the time... you make the choice!!

Your spelling, typing and/or grammar are not very good for a guy with a 4.0 GPA. Try the challenge of paying a bit more attention to detail.

Is happiness not happiness because it lasts for but a little while? Of course we all die; to some of us, that seems the best reason for making our lives happy and fulfilling. Life isn't long enough to spend time getting bored! Get out there and live life!

If you are young, healthy, smart, good looking, financially secure and have a loving family, you are already better off than billions of people on this planet. And you're bored with it, eh? The best word to describe you is probably "spoiled".

The "drives" you mentioned are all very important, of course. But only YOU can give your life meaning. Better get busy! Graduate, join the Marines, grow up!

If you have rejected Christianity and Buddhism, then there is nothing. When you die, you cease to exist: there is no afterlife. Maybe it is crappy, but it is all that there is. So suicide isn't an option.

What do you like to do? How can you set yourself to get it? Ultimately you need a source of income. This means getting a skill and doing the college thing.

Figure out what you want. I answer these questions because I want people to see how knowledgeable I am. So, for me it is ego. In order to have this, I need books, a place to put my books. So I have a house so I can have my books. Thus, I earn money to support my book habit. I suppose books are more acceptable than cocaine, but sometimes they aren't cheaper...

Is it possible you're depressed? Go see a doc. A lot of people just have bad brain chemistry, and Zoloft changes their life entirely.

Well I must say that I'm kind of freaked out reading your story because it sounds almost exactly like me except two things. One you're a guy and two I was Buddist first and then Christian.
At about the same age I felt the same way and then realized that I'm better than that and I do things because I want to and because I have something to prove to MYSELF.
Since then I have believed in three things; Hope, Faith and Love and those three things give me passion and a drive for life.

Good luck, you'll find your way soon enough.

Well..this is easy. Get off your butt and do something. Start small. Don't try to do something huge straight away, if you do that, you're bound to fail. Make a short list of small things you've been meaning to do like organizing your closets or even cleaning your room. Stick to that for a bit and then start working on your life goals. It sounds lame but it's a way to trick your brain into not putting things off all the time. You're the only one who can find the pleasure in life. I've found it alot easier to find the good in everyday and my outlook is so much better. For example, if you had a boring day, be thankful nothing horrific happened and that you made it through yet another day. Again, it sounds lame but you'll soon start looking at things a bit differently. Not right away, but it'll happen.

Your drive comes from you. No one can provide you with that. You have to want something enough for it to happen. Life is all about doing stuff you don't like, get used to it. You're only 16, you don't have all the answers yet. None of us do but, you're looking for too much, too soon. Enjoy your youth. Before you know it, you're going to be loaded down with responsibilities you'd give your left arm to ignore. Start living in the moment and stop looking for something to fullfill you. You have to be happy with yourself before you're happy with life in general.

You're not at all alone in your feelings. Most people, in fact, have no desire to do work for work's sake.

The people that are characterized as being most "successful" often have personality eccentricities or psychological conditions that drive them to act as they do.

Sex, food, warmth, acceptence, and pleasure are good motivators. But they aren't the only ones.

There's one more: self satisfaction.

That is, there are things that can bring pleasure to you merely by doing them, apart from any standard biological response.
Most people would call these things "interests".

The trick is to figure out what it is that you want out of life. What you want to do with your time. Once you figure that out, do it.

Or, put another way: the only meaning that life has is the meaning that you give to it. The direction and purpose of your life is somethign that you choose for yourself.

People are typically described as "successful" based on their social prestige and monetary wealth.

This is not the sort of success you're looking for. The success you want is "success" in the sense of "accomplishing a goal".

And, as i said, the trick is finding the goal.
It's different for everyone, although we all have things in common (like eating, and sleeping, and sex, etc.). It's something you've got to figure out for yourself. Once you have that, motivation becomes much easier - you figure out what you have to do to get what you want out of life, and then you do it.

There are still things that will drive procrastination, of course. No one likes taking out the trash, for example, even though it needs doing. The trick to that, i find, is to lay out what needs to be done ahead of time, and write down the things that you're going to do for each day. Obviously, such lists only need to include the things that you aren't motivated to do - the others will fall into place easily.
