Wasnt jesus a good person? didnt he act with kindness and goodness towards others? from all I have read the answer is yes, so if he was a good person who died for sins (which are bad) in order to uphold the good, then why would he condemn people like him who are good to a burning hell hole, just because they did not believe in him as a person? I mean isnt accepting goodness the same as accepting jesus who was the embodiment of all that is good? Who is to say that my belief in goodness isnt the equivalent of believing in jesus by believeing in what he represented?
Basically what I am saying is do you think that you have missed the real point of what he was trying to say?? Jesus=good, believing in good and being good=believing in jesus and what he stood for
Therefore belief in being good = acceptance of the lesson jesus was trying to teach and therefore even if you dont actually believe in jesus as a person conciously, if you believe in good it is the equivalent of believing in him

I am asking because I am wondering why no matter what good you do christians tell me that nobody gets into heaven if they dont "accept" jesus... what if you are wrong about what "accepting" jesus means? what if it just means accepting goodness as a way of life?

First of all, question is itself good, but should be of more unversal in nature, then specific to christians only.

Common persons, mostly are spending there life in assumptions, so dont you care much about them, it is the literate who is an intereting one.

There are many sections of your questions briefly here are some important points.

Not only christians, but nearly every religion got a thought like this (of lay persons), that they will go the good place after death, no matter what they did, but there affiliation will at last save them. Which is not true, even from there holy scriptures, e.g. of jew, christian, hindu, muslim, buddhist, sikh and many more, it is clearly said that there affiliation doesn't gives them any support, it is there good belief, etics & deed which will have the proof of being good or bad.

Secondly, the knowledge of good, has many dimensions, and one of its two fold dimension is, to realize and respect Prophets.

Historically proven, some (emminent) Prophets are Adam, Nooh, Moses, Abraham, Jesus (Eisa) and Muhammad, peace be upon them. There message is same but there era is not.

Religion most briefly thought to be the combinition of three undestandings,

Belief
Ethics &
Good Deeds

Without real belief ethics have no use, and without sincere ethics, good deeds have no value. Where common person always lay stress upon good deeds, which is said to be a ritual or tradition in intellectuals, and so they donot count belief & ethics (moral values) as the primary goods.

accepting Jesus is not the same thing as accepting "goodness." You cannot eradicate sin (which is the point) by "goodness" - it can ONLY be eradicated by the blood of Jesus. If you do not accept that He is fully God (the sinless blood by its very nature and character because of its God source) and fully man (the perfect physical sacrifice that knew no sin and did no sin) - there will be no change in the soul. The soul change being made a NEW creation in Christ Jesus. Without that, there is no entrance into heaven. THAT is why we say you must be born again by the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ....because that is the only thing that is acceptable to the Father.

1 Peter 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

19Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

So, you see, no man can be righteous, and only Jesus can save (I am the truth, the way and the life). Its not a question of who is good, but a question of who is performing the will of God.

By our standards, did Adam do wrong by eating a fruit? No, but according to the will of God, what Adam did was 100% SIN. You are not God, so you cannot tell us what is good or what is bad. Are you God?

16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:16-18 (NASB) Those are the words of Christ, Himself. Don't accept what I say as the gospel but again read the words of Jesus. Jesus condemns no one. He wants all to be saved and spend eternity with Him. His blood was shed at Calvary for all. But those that reject Him judge themselves to spend eternity apart from Jesus. NO ONE can be good, because God is Holy and only Christ, whose blood covers our sin, makes atonement for us so that we can go into the presence of God. You can't express a belief in a value system as you suggest. Your belief must be in the person of Jesus Christ, the only man to ever live that value system to perfection.
I hope this has helped.

...or what if you're just listening to bad theology and it's God that chooses His own? You take a view of equating your own goodness with Jesus, who told us how impossible it is to get to Heaven on our own merit. Belief in goodness but not Jesus? Who identified Himself as the way, the truth and the life -- no one comes to the Father but by me???

So instead of listening to bad theology, you've come up with your own. You may find a few people that will support your views. I won't subscribe to either one.

Well, denying Jesus Christ, when Gods love and Saving Grace is presented in the Love of God. Well, that is denying God. So, if one continues to deny Christ throughout this life & even at their death bed, then Christ will deny that person. That person would go to hell fire.

I believe in Jesus and read the bible and the bible don't say that to have everlasting life you have to accept Jesus. Jesus himself though that in order to have everlasting life first you had to have faith in him as the son of God, study the bible to get knowledge about God and his purpose, and than practice what you learn. because we have to ask ourselves OK i accept Jesus but does he accepts me? you have to do more... because anyone can say that they accept Jesus but as you know words are taking by the wind.
