These words are part of a prayer. Previous to that, in the same prayer, He said "the hour has come" It's a metaphor, a figure of speech. He isn't saying that within the next hour He is going to die. In effect He is saying that the time of His death is near.

Jesus knew why he had come, and he knew it was his time.

During his imminent "agony in the garden" he would review every detail of his sacrificial death at the brutal hand of the forces of evil.

There was no longer any doubt at all about what would happen over the next three days.

This was the precisely timed and perfectly executed conclusion and purpose of the 33+ years Jesus spent on earth.

Now, nothing in the universe could stop what God had so perfectly set into motion, for the purpose of our salvation.

No one but God could have predicted this with such absolute certainty. And all came to pass, exactly as Jesus predicted.

Well, keep reading chapter 17, Jesus had finished the work of spreading God's truth...He had given them His words so they may spread His truth to current and future generations so that they too may believe and have life through Him.

Later in John 19:30, the redemptive work was now complete when He said, "It is finished!" Notice the exclamation point here. He gave up His Spirit. No one took His life from Him, but He gave it up willingly so that all who believe may have eternal life.

Jesus had made God's name known to those who had been entrusted to him to teach. He had remained faithful and without blemish. His ministry had taught people about God's Kingdom Government and how it would accomplish God's will here on earth. He had performed miracles to qualify himself as having been sent by God. He had resurrected dead ones. He had cured sick ones. He had resisted Satan's attempts to lure him into disobedience. He had proven himself beyond a doubt. The rest was just a formality.

Because he had accomplished his mission....he had taught the world about the glory of his father Jehovah.

The only thing left was to offer his perfect life up a ransom for all our sins..
It was as good as done....like Abraham and Jacob..he didn't kill his son but he as much as killed him because he was convinced to rely on God 100%...for the resurrection.
Jesus relied on God for the resurrection also.
