Travelers checks used to be the best and safest way to carry money when traveling. We sometimes still take some when we travel, though we seldom cash them anymore. The most convenient way to change currency now is to use an ATM card. You have to make sure your "PIN" works internationally and that your card will be accepted in the country you're going to. Credit cards are accepted most places, but you may run into small restaurants and B & B type places that will take cash only.

Travellers cheques were never meant to be petty cash for paying for food etc. As you know, you can get cash from ATMs easily. People use TCs as personal cheques while travelling. Let's say you need to pay someone (not a business) a sum of money, it might be for a villa you're renting from someone, you can pay them in TC. People also get travellers cheques when they want to purchase a certain foreign currency. And it is an easy way to transport money into a country in the most convenient denominations of 1000 USD. If you relocate to a new country, you can use TCs to open a bank account.

don't use travellers cheques. nowadays you just take your debit card and get the currency you need as you go.
i live in asia and just traveled in australia at christmas. travellers cheques are a thing of the past. we use the debit card to get cash as we go for sightseeing and food and then we use a credit card (our visa card is actually the same as our debit card) to pay for hotels. that's all you need. traveling is much easier than it used to be.
