Younger children need more sleep than older children.Actually, after the age of 12 I wouldn't make my children go to bed when I want but when they want. When they are teenagers they are more likely to decide what's the best way to spend their time and by their own experience, they will learn how much sleep they need.

I would let the 19 year old stay up as late as they want because Im assuming they are either, high school or college student or working. If they were responsible they would be getting to bed on their own at a pretty decent hour anyway...you know before 1:00 am. =)
3 year old would be first to hit the sack and the rest would follow. 12 and 13 would go at the same time. Everybody needs their sleep. Kids at that age are growing and need around 8-10 hours a night....in my opinion.

"why do you let your teenagers ages 13 - 19 stay up later then the little kids ages 3 -12" Number one I don't have any teenagers, number two I don't have any little kids...So it is a moot point. It doesn't make much sense to make a blanket statement/question since not everyone who responds on this board is going to be able to answer your question.
However, teens are susually,(at least my daughter was when she was a teen), responsible for getting themselves out of bed and off to school in the morning and, in the case of my daughter as example, she knew what time she needed to be in bed in order to get the rest she needed for the next day. Smaller children don't have that knowledge, however my daughter was getting herself out of bed on her own and getting ready for school by the time she was nine. Differerent ages call for different responsiblities.

I don't have children that old yet but I would put a 3-7 year old in bed at 8, a 7-12 year old in bed at 9, and a 12-15 year old in bed at ten, children 15-20 will be in bed at 11 unless they're at work. Why? Because it is determined that children need x amount of hours of sleep per night. In order for children to do well in school they need the proper amount of sleep.
The following is from webmd.com
3-6 Years Old : 10 ¾ - 12 hours per day
7-12 Years Old : 10 - 11 hours per day
12-18 Years Old : 8 ¼ - 9 ½ hours per day
Sleep, among other factors, influences your child's temperament. Poor sleep (too little and/or poor quality) is associated with behavior problems like aggression, defiance, non-compliance, oppositional behavior, acting out, and hyperactivity. The inability to put herself back to sleep unassisted and irregular bedtimes are also associated with behavior problems. It is clear, then, that the proper amount and quality of sleep are very important for your child's development.

12 is far from 3 so grouping those age groups together makes no sense. Anyway, kids have difference sleeping requirements depending on their ages. A 3 year old needs more sleep then a 12 year old.

Children from 3-12 are still growing and maturing... their bodies NEED more sleep because we heal and grow while we're sleeping... so the more sleep, the healthier and better your growth will be. Children aged 13-19 have done most of their growing and don't require as much sleep.
You're not being punished... your folks LOVE you enough to make you sleep as much as your body needs!

as you get older you need less sleep to function properly. children that are young sleep more than teenagers have to. that's why when you bring your new born home, all the do is sleep for the first little while, and children in pre-school take naps.
teenagers can make some decisions by themselves, and if sleep isn't one of their top priorities that their fault, but children that are younger need to be told when yo go to bed. you can't make teenagers do anything.
