I recently lost my job, my family and everything. During the repossession of my car, i had important paperwork like my US passport and some military service records. Upon calling the finance company they refused to tell me which recovery company they used and wont give me information on how to get the paperwork back. Is this legal? Will this influence the judgement of relief in my favor?

if you know what company it was (if you did not see the repo, ask around and see if someone did) look in the phone book at call them up. its not legal for them to keep the personal property in the car, just the car. if the finance company persists, tell them they will be hearing from a lawyer for illegally detainng you personal property. also check with the local police department. a lot of the time, repo company's are required to report their repo's to them, so when someone calls in stating their car is missing or stolen, they don't go looking for a car that has actually been repo'd. the police might be able to tell you who has it. if not, follow up with legal aid in your area

If you can afford a lawyer, then go to legal aide, they are lawyers who help those in situations like yours. Check your phone book either under Legal Aide, or Blue Pages Under government. They will let you know what is legal and what is not. You may have to make an appointment and fill out some forms. But if it gets your papers back, it is still under confidentiality of lawyer and client.
