This is very common. The nerve that causes the gag reflex is right there.
Sorry, but you just have to get used to it.

It depends on the way he/she brushes the teeth. If you brush touches the sides or the back of the oral cavity, or even the posterior part of your tongue, there is a chance that gag reflex will occur. These areas that i mentioned are innervated by the sensory branch of our vagus nerve (Cranial nerve 10). Once a stimulus is given (like touch or pressure), gag reflex will occur. Try not to reach those "far" areas with your toothbrush. But take note that gag reflex is a good sign that your vagus nerve is properly functioning, because vagus nerve also innervates the other parts of the body such as the intestines myenteric and meissner's plexuses.

I think that we all do this occasionally, But some people are much more sensitive to oral stimuli. I tend to gag when brushing my teeth. I know it sounds crazy (old wives tale that works) If you try brushing with a mouth wash dipped tooth brush then instead of "swish" rinsing, wet your tooth brush with fresh water and brush rinse a few times, for some reason it does desensitize the gag reflex. Don't know why but it works...try doing this a few times a week but don't neglect regular brushing.
Good Luck

You probably just have a really sensitive gag reflex. Do other things make you gag? Like taking pills, going to the dentist and having him/her work on your teeth? Maybe it's the toothpaste you're using?

Maybe it is the type of tooth paste that you are using. Or maybe it is time to get a new toothbrush.
