I was a 2 pack a day smoker from the time I was 12 and my doctor told me that if I didnt stop that it was going to be bad because of my family history. I tryed niccorete, I tryed to drink through a straw , I really tryed everything. The only thing that really worked was this patch http://quitsmoking.freesitehoster.com .
I was on it for 3 weeks and it really curbed my cravings. The bottom line is it is just going to take time once you get off ciggies. The craving probably will never go away but I am telling you this patch sure did help. Hope that this is helpful and good luck.

My dad smoked for 35 years...he tried the gum, the patch, all that stuff...but it didn't work for him. Then one day he went to the hospital--he couldn't breathe and he was so hot and lightheaded that he thought he might be having a heart attack. It turns out that the cigarettes had completely decimated his immune system, and the doctor told him that if he smoked any more he'd be dead in a week. Seriously, a cold would have killed him at that point, he had no antibodies to fight it. He's been clean for 10 months now.
I guess all you really need is motivation. (and having something to put in your mouth...a sucker, a straw, anything your lips can wrap around...can help) You can't do it for your wife or your kids (as much as you may want to). You have to do it for you, or it won't stick, and in your cravings you might even grow to resent them for "making" you stop smoking.
Good luck! Hope this helps!
EDIT: My dad says the reason the patches and gum didn't work is because you're still getting the nicotine, so you're carrying on the addiction, just without the extra toxins and the relaxing hand motions you're used to.
And about the candy...make sure to have some in your cigarette pocket...that way you have something to grab ahold of when you reach for a cigarette.

Hi there! I am an RN and come from a family of smokers. I, myself have chosen never to smoke, but I have seen firsthand the troubles it can cause, both from a loved ones standpoint as well as from a medical standpoint.
The decision to quit is a brave one, and I am proud of you. There are many things that can help you quit smoking. Nicotine is a drug, and an addiction, but the battle can be fought and won if you really decide to stick to it.
The nicotine patches are available in three doses to help you step down gradually. You can also use nicotine gum, or lozenges, but they are more expensive and some people don't like the taste. You can also ask your doctor for oral medication such as zyban which really seems to help fight the cravings.
My best advice is to use one of the methods above, if they appeal to you. Add to that picking up a hobby, some kind of craft, golf, something to keep your hands busy that you enjoy. I really like to scrapbook, and I saw you have kids. Something like that can really pay off on many levels.
I have also know people who have gone to a hypnotist to quit smoking. The good ones will not only treat you in office, but will send you home with tapes or CD's to listen to when you get in a tough spot. It really helped my Dad. He smoked for 40 years, and he works for Phillip Morris! Talk about pressure.
At any rate, good luck to you on you new adventure. I applaud your effort. Your body will thank you, and your kids will also. You are showing them that things that are hard to do are not unachievable. God bless!

I gave up smoking 6yrs ago after smoking for 12yrs and I believe you really have to be mentally ready to give up.
I gave up cold turkey but I was also unwell at the time and wasn't able to smoke as it made the condition worse so that might have helped.
I know a woman who gave up in November last year by using the Gum and she's still on the gum but not smoking.
When you are ready, you WILL be able to do it!

Well, I never smoked, but as a nurse I took care of lots of people who smoked.
Maybe you'd like to put a picture of someone with emphysema nearby so you can look at it everytime you get the urge. That helped some of my patients.
Think about how much fun it would be to kiss an ashtray too.

I quit smoking also...let me tell you this....You need to make a list of reasons why you want to quit...after that tomorrow when you wake up you say im nicotine free today..my family, my children, my friends are more important than smoking...then drop it....I watched my grandfather die a slow painfull death begging for morphine for the pain...do you want to put your children through that??
Smoking is a choice that YOU make...currently you are choosing a cigaret over your childs.

We all know that " If there is a will then there must be a way". You said you've smoked for 14 yrs so it might be hard to get rid of it. But the best way to get rid of it is get a hobby. Get something to do. This will keep your mind from thinkin about smokin. Thats all i hope this helps.
