First of all, props for having plans to definitely take your cat to the vet, too many people use this question/answer forum as a substitute for a vet. I have 4 cats and work with foster cats, I have had a cat that was dehydrated from diarrhea that had a similar problem and was fine. However (and don't let this scare you because I am NOT an expert) I know a girl that had a cat that got really thin and started drinking a lot of water and it had nephritis (not sure of spelling) which is a type of kidney disease. But the impression I got from her was that nephritis is a disease that usually affects older cats (hers was 12 in human years). Since your cat is young and seems to be in reasonably good health otherwise with a caring owner, it is prob something minor. GOOD LUCK! PS-with treatment from the vet, my friends cat lived another almost 2 years

It's a good idea. When a cat gets real thin, it's the right time for them to visit the vet. The water drinking is interesting. My cat did this when he was very ill - he did die incidentally but it was because he had leukemia. One can actually do damage by drinking too much water, so that is an important thing. Usually cats don't drink that much so it makes me wonder. It would be right to go in as soon as you can. Hope shes okay.

Definitely take her to see the vet. The symptoms you're describing could mean thyroid disease or diabetes. I've had cats with both, and as long as you catch it early they're usually fine. I currently have a 15 year old cat taking meds for a thyroid problem, and we're confident he'll make it to 20.
It could also be something less serious, but getting a diagnosis is a very important first step, and one that shouldn't be put off.

Unfortunately, at the most serious she may have diabetes, and at the least she is probably sick. The loss of weight, drinking more water than usual and the multiple bathroom visits are pretty much classic diabetes symptoms, even in humans. Take her to a vet, and you will feel much better...at least you'll know for sure and be able to care for her...good luck, I hope she'll be okay!

Hyperthyroidism comes to mind with the symptoms you describe: drinking a lot, thin cat, over-active (?). The disease is easily diagnosed through a simple blood test. It is also very treatable with a variety of options on the table, such as medications, surgery to remove portions of the gland, or radioactive iodine therapy (a drug that inhibits thyroid activity). Statistically it has been found that cats fed a diet of fish-based cat food develop more hyperthyroidism and other glandular ailments.Take kitty to the vet and see.

Our last cat stopped eating and seemed to be drinking gallons and gallons of water. It turns out she had some rare kidney or liver disorder and had to be put to sleep. You should take the cat to the vet.

Your cat could be dehidrated and is very thirsty.
Solution- Feed it wet food with some water so it can get the fluid and be getting the fat in too.My kitten was like that before.Best to take him/her to the Vet
good luck

You definitely should go see a vet. I remember watching Emergency Vets once where a cat was doing that, but I can't remember why it was. But you should definitely take her to the vet, especially since it's odd behavior for her.

Seeing a vet would be a good thing. Your cat could be sick. It is possible for a cat to have Diabetes. Is it urinating alot ? Does she have diarrhea? In any case take her to a vet ASAP to be safe.
