for a young teen, 13-16 overweight child, my science teacher said it is possible for them to increase bone mass from intense cardio and while on a good diet, is this true? so does this mean you will grow taller? how much taller if so?

Bones do rearrange theirselves according to the forces on them so I imagine some kinds of cardio would change the bone mass/density for the bones that are carrying the forces.

I don't think this will make you grow taller. Being healthy and eating healthy food will help you grow to your maximum potential, but I don't think you can do anything to change that. That is, your genes determine how tall you are, so as long as you are well-nourished, thats how tall you will be.

umm, what, does increasing your bone mass make you grow taller? wouldnt it just make them stronger, (heavier)
I dont know
I think maybe the point is that overweight children may not be getting all the nutrients they need.. that their bodies may not be really strong, their bones.
That with exercise the body can become stronger but is needed in diet also. I mean giving the body everything it needs to grow the best it can. Not diet as in controlling food to lose weight.
Exercise-cardio requires strong bones to support joint movement, which is another good reason to start simple, so that you're body can strengthen up first to prevent injury. That once the bones had become used to the exercise they would become stronger, having a greater mass?
I don't know. I dont think it would make you taller, might make you feel taller, and at most might help with posture and muscles supporting bones or vice versa to have a better posture, seeming taller. Weight does put strain on the body.

The key word is "possible". What the good science teacher means by a good diet means, fruit, veggy, fish, nuts, steak, chicken, pork. Low salt,

Lean mean fighting machine.

It is good to grow taller, not side way.

We are still growing.
Sometimes, not up, not down, not side way.
Our finger nails and hair still is growing until 101 years old.

BUT, do not loss bone mass ! I do not know what will loss bone mass. This will be a good question for the science teacher. Get back with me.

exercise helps increase the absorbtion of calcium so it can help your bones stay strong. I'm not sure if it will help you grow taller or not though. That regulated by hormones as well.
