Best type of martial arts.. there is no best type. None what so ever..
If there was the best type, everyone one would be doing it, sorta like the unstoppable kick, or unblockable punch.. no one would practice anything else..
However, you need to look at styles, and what YOU want to learn..
Hard vs soft, direct hits vs changes in direction, more offensive, more defensive, self protection or sport, inner peace and control.
It depends on what you are looking for...
for your best bet:
1. make a list of all the different dojos, and gyms in your area, find out what styles they teach, call or better yet, visit, and ask about their style. find what works for you.

Martial arts ans sport are 2 totally different concept. They by no means are equal. The 2 look different and are practiced different. Unfortunately many today do not know the difference. Many are being taught a sport and never learn the art. Therefore people with no knowledge of the arts see a weak version of a true art and gauge everyone according to their knowledge of martial arts and they don' have any knowledge. I love how pugspaw, sensei scandal, stillcrazy put it. I have nothing against those that play games. That is great for them. However, I am interested in having the knowledge and ability of self defense. I'm interested in budo. I do not even want to use the term martial with sport. The 2 does not go together. One is a game. The other is war. There is nothing better than when attacked knowing how to position yourself in a manner that the attacker can't do anything, but is exposed to everything that will stop the threat immediately. When I was a child I played tag. I don't play that childish game anymore. We used to trade punches in grade school. I don't trade punches anymore. If I hit you I mean to stop you. I do not look for a referee to say you tapped out. I'll know you are out when the lights go out and you go limp. I'll know that you surrender when I hear or feel the joint snap. I'll know you can't use that limb right now to attempt to harm me or my family.

Martial Artist is a personal thing, one Art that looks good for one my not be the Art for another. it my take some years before finding just what works for you. For almost 40 years I have studied about 6 different Arts, but, for the past 10 years it's been Kenpo Karate. This is an awesome self defense Art with devastating techniques.
Take a look at some Kenpo demos on youtube.com or look it up on your favorite search engine. Look it up in your phone book or even call your local Martial Arts Supply store.
I know I'll receive a thumbs-down for this statement but, try and stay away from those big chain-schools/sport karate clubs. They cost big bucks and teach you a bunch of Hollywood techniques that don't work on the street.
Kenpo is a street prov-en Art and was designed for multiple attackers from different angles.
I hope this information was helpful and good luck.

It depends on a few things--like where you want to go with it, how hard you wish to train, and what's most comfortable to you. If you have a muscular frame and strength is your weapon of choice, shotokan might be a good bet. If you prefer legwork, maybe Tae Kwon Do, Muay Tai, or basic kickboxing. If you like flashy stuff, such as what you see in most movies, try Wushu. Or, if you like a flowing, circular art that emphasizes everything and teaches real fighting techniques that won't win many competitions, try Shaolin.
It's best just to shop around. Beware the word "contract," though. If an instructor starts talking about contracts being required, run away quickly.

There really is no best martial art. Many people think a martial art is best only because it is best to them. The best martial art to do is the one you like with moves you feel comfortable with. For instance if you like striking any ma such as kung fu, taekwondo, karate would be good. If you like throwing/ground fighting then you can take jujitsu, judo, aikido.

why?you can just get q to make you up a pen gun or something?
the best martial art is the one that suits you and your situation.heres some info that may help.
A good well rounded style would be freestyle Karate. You will learn stand up,ground, grappling and weapons. What a lot of people don't understand is that freestyle Karate is about practical street defence not who can kick the highest or punch a pad the hardest. It's definitely not a sport martial art like TKD or BJJ.The motto of my style is the best of everything in progression.Basically that means we don't care where the technique comes from we improve it and integrate it into our style while still maintaining tradition as do most freestyle Karate's.
The hardest thing is finding a good experienced instructor.I would recommend Bushi Kai or Zen Do Kai, but if your not in Australia or New Zealand you may have some difficulty finding some one who teaches these styles. These styles also usually have separate classes available to everyone in Muay Thai and BJJ/Submission/Shoot wrestling. If you can't find one of these i would suggest Kempo or Enshin or another freestyle Karate.

No possible answers. The real question is which martial art is best for you. Visit dojo's research and make sure they arent a "mcdojo" not a "micdojang"!!! Its "mcdojo"!!!!! Do The art that suits you. Some good strong styles that I recomend you look into are BJJ (this one you may wanna combine with something else as it's weak in multiple fighting), muy thai, and shaolin eagle claw kung fu.

Check out www.KrackedSkullz.com
I do not believe there is a Best art, only best situations for arts to look their best. Well here is an art that has alot to it, but still has holes. Alot of fun though, and actually very effective.

There's no real "best", but the more useful ones would be Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, and Muai Thai. Jiu-Jitsu is where you can learn to fight on the ground, with submissions. Muai Thai has all the stand up striking you could possibly ask for. Do both, if possible.
