Hi Jo
I think the problem with the info you've been given so far is people are only recommending their areas which is not necessarily the best place to be.
Rentals - Generally the further you move out from the city, the cheaper your rent is going to be although due to the current economic boom in WA, nothing's really "cheap". Obviously your choices are also going to be influenced on where you'll be working. Perth has become an urban sprawl and although there are people that travel an hour to work, I wouldn't consider it the norm. As far as the comment about an alarm is concerned, it depends where you live. Personally I wouldn't live in any of the suburbs named. I'm a NOR (North of the River) person. Best suburbs for well priced rentals; NOR (Close to beach) - Scarborough/Trigg is great and you can find some reasonably priced units. Coming inland a little but staying along major roads, Karrinyup, Osborne Park, Doubleview, Innaloo. Or you can head a little further north; Ocean Reef (near the beach). If you want to be closer to the city, Leederville is probably the best priced suburb. Subiaco & North Perth are expensive. Mt Hawthorn is really nice. Next suburb over is Joondanna, it's cheaper but no where near as nice and probably more prone to burglaries. SOR (South of the River) - I would say South Perth is probably the nicest suburb but it's costly. Queenspark has boomed over the last few years although that's quite a way from the coast. And of course there's Fremantle. Freo is like Perth city, it has everything. If you look at areas like Rockingham/Port Kennedy/Mandurah, bear in mind you'll be over 45km from Perth city. As I mentioned, it depends where you'll be working. As rents in most suburbs have increased over the last few years, you may want to consider sharing a house, even if just for a while. This will also assist in the "getting to know people" area.
As far as meeting people goes, depends on where you live. If you're anywhere around Freo, everything is there. Great cafes, nightlife, shopping etc. There's plenty of good pubs on a Friday arvo. Anywhere close to the city has the same. Head into Northbridge and you'll find all the club/pub nightlife you want.
fiona s was right about Osborne Park (NOR) for furniture/electrical etc. If you're SOR, Cannington is the place to go. Westfield Carousel is, I believe, still Perth's largest shopping centre. Cannington also has a huge range of electrical/furniture outlets.
Nice motel to stay in. The word being "motel" not hotel. There's not really any motels in the city but there are some cheaper hotels. Have a look at www.accommodationperth.info There is everything from backpackers to 5 star hotels.
Happy moving. Hope it all goes well for you.
Cheers

Hi Jo,
hope these help:
-I recommend in South Perth / Como for renting if you want to be close to the city or Cottesloe / Scarborough if you want to be by the beach.
-If you enjoy sports put your name down to join a netball/soccer/basketball (whatever you like) team, I find that is a great way to meet people. Try getting a job at a big company where there will be plenty of people your age.
-Shopping is good in the city and there are plenty of shopping centres spread out around the place, I love Karrinyup. Electrical stores try -The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, Retravision
-There is a lot of motel/hotels in the city depending on budget try www.wotif.com. Seeing as I live here I have never stayed in any budget accomodation here but have stayed at the nice hotels and I recommend Burswood Resort.
Good luck with your move here Jo, I know it would be scary at first but I am sure you will meet people easily

We lived in the Perth area for a while. The others gave out good suggestions. GET AN ALARM SYSTEM where you are renting. We were broken into HEAPS! Stay away from areas like Thornly, Maddington, Gosnells, etc. Look for a home that is NOT near a train station, major bus stop, or large shopping complex. These allow for easy "get aways" for thieves.

Cottesloe- right by the beach for renting
Subiaco is also good. Leederville is right next door but cheaper renting.
Meet people- out at night, go to subi or claremont or the city.
Shopping- if you like designer try claremont, subiaco and king st in the city. Mt Lawley is also good. Fremantle- billie and rose, soul sisters.
Go to osbourne park for all furniture electriccal- it has everything for the home in one suburb.

You've missed the boat for buying in Spearwood........ prices have already gone crazy.
Would suggest trying Coolbellup, Hamilton Hill (both close to Freo), or Parmelia, Medina, Orelia a little further south for renting (or buying) at a good price.
