you should call the shelters in your area and see if anyone has called to report their dog or take him in to see if he is microchipped

This forum will most likely not help you find the dog's owners.

You will need to be proactive to find the owners. First, call your local animal control office, animal shelter / pound, and vet clinics - you can get all of those numbers from the phone book or over the Internet. Tell them that you have found a dog, and whether they have any lost dog fliers that match this dog's description.

The reason I'm saying this is that most of the time when people loose a dog, those are the agencies and places that they contact first and give a lost dog flier to - most shelters keep a folder with lost dog fliers by their front desk to check them against animals that are picked up and brought in by animal control or citizens. Most vet offices do the same.

So calling them would be a great first step.

Also, you may want to consider taking the dog to a veterinarian or the local shelter so it can be checked for a tattoo or microchip that might help identify the owner.

Tattoos are generally located inside one of the dog's ears, or along the inner side of the thigh. However, they're not that useful in determining a dog's owner because there's no national tattoo registry.

Microchips are implanted between a dog's shoulders at the top of the neck, and your vet or animal control officer has a reader that can help identify the chip. Again, the chip must be registered by the owner, but as registration is offered automatically at most places that do chipping, the chances to find the owners of a chipped dog are much higher.

Lastly, if this dog was found in your immediate neighborhood and nothing else has yielded results, you may want to make a "found dog" flier and place it around the neighborhood and in local shopping centers, grocery stores, etc. Make sure the flier includes your phone number, but not a photo of the dog - ask people to describe the dog on the phone so you can make sure they're not just someone who wants a free dog but the actual owners!

I'm not in Bakersfield, but you should call your local Animal Control, Animal Shelter or SPCA to turn the dog in. If someone is missing that dog, they have most likely filed a missing dog report. Those organizations are usually the first place a dog owner turns to when missing a dog You should at the very least call them to see if a report was filed on a dog matching that one's description. If a report hasn't been filed, don't just assume it doesn't have an owner missing it. Run an ad in your newspaper and maybe put a few flyers up. Good luck on trying to find the owner!

It's doubtful you'll find the owner. Doesn't hurt to try, maybe work at it for a month. After that, either consider the dog yours and keep the little rascal, or place an add in the paper for a "free to good home dog." I don't trust most shelters. Too many dogs go in, not enough come out. No-kill shelters seem good, but I've never heard of one that stopped taking in dogs. they don't kill them, but I'm sure that the unnadopted dogs go to another shelter after a certain amount of time, and that shelter may not be no-kill.

Good luck. Oh, and the internet isn't a great place to base the found add. Those of us with constant internet access would be shocked, SHOCKED at how many people don't even have home computors. The thought of that makes me sad...

I would print flyers of a found dog and post them around the neighborhood. Call the vets in your area. Call the Animal Shelters in your are. Call the ASPCA in your area telling them about the dog you've found. On the flyers don't tell them what he looks like or any real information about him even that he is a he. Tell them a number to reach you at and that you found a dog. Post an ad in the PennySaver or something like that. I hope you find his home!!!

Please do not send the pup to the shelter. They will often be destroyed after a week or less or sent to an experiment lab for life.
Check the newspaper to see if anyone has lost the dog & placed an ad~it usually takes 3 days for an ad to appear. You can also place a found ad for free. You can ask around the neighborhood to see if any one has lost it nearby or you can keep it or place an ad to a good home.

Post it on www.craigslist.org but don't include all the details like you just did here, or the wrong person will pick it up, like a research facility or something...
