On long flights in particular, most flight attendants would wake you to see if you wanted to eat.

Flight attendants are not required by any airline to wake you for meal or drink service. But, people often complain or decide they want a meal or drink when they wake after the service has ended; you can imagine how annoying this is for the flight attendants. They either didn't realize you were sleeping, or were just trying to make it easier on themselves.

They do not have to wake you. I never see the flight attendants wake people for drinks, and very rarely see it when they are serving a meal. Sometimes they feel it is a nice gesture to ask, just in case you wanted something.

I guess you could look at it either way, being somewhat rude, or trying to be thoughtful.

But they don't have to wake you up

My personal experience was the flight attendants didn't even bother waking me up when they were serving meals :)

When I have flown long-haul the flight attendants have always announced that if you don't want to be woken up when the meals are served, fasten your seat belt over your blanket so they can see that you don't want to be woken up. That has been with 3 different airlines (Cathay, Singapore and Emirates). I suppose other airlines could be different though.

You can ask the flight attendant to put a "do not wake" sticker on your seat.
