That is a two fold question, if you are meaning heighth then it is the Irish Wolfhound which, on average stands around 32 in at the shoulder however the worlds tallest goes to a great dane who stood 42 in!
now if you are speaking of mass (heaviest), the largest is the English Mastiff, the worlds heaviest dog was Zorba the OEM that weighed 343 lbs! Mastiffs have been known to pull as more than 7300 pounds at a time, which is about the same weight as some cars---that's a bulldozer!
Bullmastiff's are not even in the top 3!

The wolf is not even in the top half of the largest dog breeds, there are so many actual breeds of dog bigger than the wolf which has an average of 50-115 lbs depending on location and species. Breeds like the English Mastiff, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, St. Bernard, Neopolitan Mastiff, Spanish Mastiff....and there's more! And I don't recall her asking for "US" breeds in particular either...but if you want to go that route, the Alaskan Malamute is larger than the German Shepherd LOL, but the German shepherd was not developed in the US......take a guess where it orriginated from.........lol.

The tallest current dog is an English Great Dane, who is 42 inches at the shoulder, and 8 feet from tip of nose to tip of tail. An English mastiff is the heaviest.

This will depend whether you mean 'large' by height or by weight...
For example, an Irish Wolfhound is large by height, but has a relatively light build (and doesn't eat all that much). However, Newfoundlands and Mastiffs are shorter in height, but are very heavy, big-boned dogs.
