My guess is that you are thinking about ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. This disease process, which is progressive and incurable, in a nutshell, causes you to lose control of your muscles, over time the person is eventually unable to move, but the brain is still functioning properly. In addition this condition wipes out your ability to breathe, requiring the need for a ventilator or breathing machine. In the end it is fatal.
For more info do a quick search for ALS on Google and you can find loads of info on causes and the search for a cure.

Hope this helps.
