Custom or tradition.
If the person who is getting sworn in wants it, then so be it.
Everyone else should just get over it and move on with life.
Somehow something anyone does is disrespectful to someone else. You can never win.

Umm - this country was HARDLY founded for the SOLE PURPOSE of religious freedom, but I do get where you're coming from.
The answer to your question is that Christians make up the majority in America, and for the masses, seeing someone take an oath on their "good book" somehow makes them feel that the person they've elected is more duty-bound to their oath, then if they simply gave their word as an honest member of the human race. I'm sure any president who refused would be labeled an atheist and impeached, even if he was the best president our country ever had.
As you pointed out, clever scu*mbags with personal agendas will always trick the weak-minded masses, no matter what book they are forced to take an oath on, because the masses are STUPID.

Every office holder in the US swears on a Bible. It is true that only those who are honest people will uphold their vows, but much of ceremony is a formality and tradition. It is most definitely the tradition of the United States to believe in the God of the Bible. What you believe is irrelevant. You should be happy that
the state doesn't force beliefs on you. This is the most tolerant country of true believers in the world. The are probably thousands of varieties of Christianity in our country. Get over your stereotyping of Christians. You may think that all Christians think the same things, but you are so wrong!

I think it's one of those things that just isn't worth the fight it would take to stop. There are so many bigger fish to fry...this one doesn't even come close to the kitchen.
I think the big things we should be focused on are the PTO groups changing text books to be more fundamentalist friendly....public tax dollars being used to fund political Churches under the faith based initiatives program....and publicm dollars funding religious education under the voucher programs.

fairly, if enjoyed them for different motives. i does no longer vote for them or against them based in simple terms on religious ideals. Separation of church and state absolutely everyone? Edit - Wow, it kind of sounds like a lot of human beings are turning out to be thumbs down. I specific wish there are not immature human beings working around right here, balloting against human beings in simple terms through fact they do no longer think of such as you. i'm agnostic, and can vote for a President in spite of faith, yet i did no longer provide THUMBS all the way down to those that're for sure religious and does no longer vote for that guy or woman. enable's improve up and act like adults. after all, we must be adults to vote besides!

I've heard he doesn't actually do that. He raises his right hand when sworn in and the Bible is for a picture afterwards and isn't actually a Bible, just a black book.

Theodore Roosevelt was not sworn in on a Bible. This practice should be eliminated. They don't do it in court rooms... why for the president?

I love your question and everything you said is true. The government is always trying to force stuff on us. I think that this is a clear indication that there is no separation of church and state as it should be.

The Bible is the Word of God to most of our Presidents. Also, the Word of God is a sure foundation.
If you hate God so much, why don't you move to an antichrist nation.
