It's a brain death or mind death because their brain is not responsive to stimuli, there are different stages where some parts of the brain die but others still work, example was terri schiavo, her brain still controlled her lung function so she wasn't on a pulmonary machine/respirator but she couldn't eat, she had a stomach tube. Some wind up on full life support, they have not found very good ways to bring brain power and usage back.

Vegetable State is where one just lies there in a bed, I have a good friend who is like that he is awake and alert ,but can not move anything but his eyes the doctor said he would be in a vegetated state for the rest of his life (he was injured while we were skydiving ) brain dead is when the brain has stopped all functions of ever thing .A machine serves only to keep a heartbeat ,and blood flow with out the machine the person is dead as well
