Measure your window two inches past each side and from right above the window to 4 inches below the window. Golden rule my mother claims.

Now if your making your drapes then you double the amount of fabric left to right for pleating.

Those answers are for the finished size. You need to know how long. Measure from where you want the top to be to where you want the bottom the be. Add 8" to this measurement for the bottom hem. If you want pleats add 10" more to this measurement. Most drapes are 2-3 times the width of the window, so multiply the final sum by 2-3. That will give you the total yardage you need. When you have this number, go to a fabric store. Material comes in 36", 54" and 60" widths. Pick the fabric you want and convert your total yardage to conform to the width you want to buy. If these instructions are too much for you, get a friend, who sews, to help.

Basically you just have to measure the size of your windows...or how far you want your drapes to extend past the windows on both sides. Then measure how long you want them..window sash length,to the floor, etc. Then if you are buying ready-made drapes, choose the closest size to what you measured, and install your curtain rods accordingly. A lot of professional drapery/decorating stores have people who will come and do it for you for no charge~expecting your business:) And I know J.C. Penney used to offer this service also.
Hope this helps:)
Good Luck!!

The width is decided by how much wider you want the drape than the window and of course length depends on your taste. The real question I believe you want is how much curtain or drape to look full enough? That is 11/2 to 2 times the width of your rod length. and someone says look at J.C.Penney's catalog

With a measuring tape or yard stick. Figure out the rod and mounting you want (inside or outside the window frame) and go from there...
