I am teaching a 4 part class, and while I have service projects for them to do, I need to spend the first day explaining what service is. Also, I am doing this in a church, so any Christian references are welcome. Thanks!

I don't know the age of the children you have to teach, however, you could use the Beatitudes, Matthew 5. Or you could also use WWJD? (What Would Jesus Do?)
I have an organization here in the States that works to raise money to help the very poor in a small area of Tanzania, E. Africa. I have spoken at RE classes and schools. I find that by simply showing pictures of the conditions in the area I serve and telling their life's situations, the students I am speaking to start asking questions, which leads into the area of service and caring for our lesser brothers. www.throughourhands.org

It depends upon the age group, but I would suggest that you get some resource material and contacts from the Points of Light Foundation. They have curriculum used nationally at many volunteer centers and other organizations.

Here are some links to help you get started:

I work with a volunteer center that provides youth leadership training for teens to start community and other volunteer programs. They use the Points of Light Foundation as one of the main resources for many of their programs.

There are so many ways to make a difference, and you don't necessarily need to have a large scope with some of the projects. You can make a difference within your own community or neighborhood, and it can be a simple as picking up trash, tutoring a child, or helping someone in need.

Good luck with your class!

Use your beliefs on outreach this is something true to you.
Spend a few minutes to allow the children to look the main words of the subject up. What does: community, outreach, need, responsibilty, service mean?
