Being called ironic can mean different things depending on the context. It can mean "humorously sarcastic or mocking" as the Steve Martin character described himself in the movie Roxanne. Often it simply highlights the incongruity between what is expected and what is.

One example definition from the link that follows is: "a type of humor based on using words to suggest the opposite of their literal meaning."

Example: When being pulled over by the police for speeding, my wife remarked: "Isn't this nice?"

Ironic means contrary to expected meaning. Some people misuse it by calling it ironical and others misuse it by confusing it with coincidental.
