I'm currently teaching first grade and our literacy program is horrible. I really need some great, fun, exciting literacy (reading/writing - they can all do both at varying levels) that I can wow my class with.

Since it is the second half of 1st grade...maybe try some Reader's Theater with your kids. I have taught 2nd grade through junior high level, and they all love Reader's Theater. I let them create props and we pretend that we are in Hollywood. I'm constantly asked when we are going to do Reader's Theater again.

For writing, maybe have them write in their journals every morning, about anything that interests them...or give them an interesting writing prompt. If you have a large class, maybe let groups of 5 or so come up and share their journal when everyone is done, so they can be proud of their work.

Good ?.... I'd like to know the same.
How about lots of descriptive word brain storming. Ex..put a common item in a bag and let each person feel it for only a few seconds, then have them say or write what the item feels like, how they think it looks (color/shape), and what they think it might be.
Never tried this, but I think we will be doing it soon...sounds fun and creative!
