he's shy. probably self-conscious, or lack of self-esteem.

If a guy talks without looking at you, he could just not be very comfortable looking at people's faces. But if he's smiling, it means he's (more) relaxed, but probably unsure about the situation- he might not feel like he's in control, either of the situation or of himself, and doesn't want to show it. If you remember, and he's trying to glance at you a couple of times but always looks away again, it means he's trying to seem a little more bold.

It could mean he's shy or it could mean that he's not truthful as he can't look you in the eyes when speaking with you..or even look at you at all...then smiles to himself ...

He's not secure with himself and has low confidence? Actually.... he might be thinking of something (hence the smile), and hence was not looking at your face

my ex does the same thing...he recently confided in me and four other people about something going on in his life, and he didnt look at me about 95% of the time. he used to have this big thing about me not making eye contact with him, because he said he couldnt tell what i was really thinking....now he isnt giving me any eye contact, so i am curious if he has something else to tell me but he doesnt know how.

i dont know what that means but i would personally hate that, and think that he is rude for doing so, if he ever were sincere while talking to me he should look me in the eye and share the joke that is inside his head

Doesn't matter, i have boyfriend just look at me all the time, but still not good, so it doesn't matter
